The One with Pupusas

Week 44 (June 20th-26th)

All the recent converts are back on track and stronger than ever thanks to diligent work and the hand of the Lord this week! It was a great week with solid lessons and significant improvement in our communication with those we teach and members of the branch. We are feeling much more optimistic with a perfect brightness of hope.

The week started off strong with another visit to the temple (how blessed am I?) for a tour around the grounds with our most solid investigator, Yary! As a part of the tour of the temple grounds, there is also a class twice a week at the stake center across the street that lasts about an hour that goes over what the temple is for and why it is so important. However we were the only ones that came that night (the last time I went there were about 20 people there) and there was no translator available. So my champion companion live translated the ENTIRE presentation! Hermana Klein always goes above and beyond and definitely magnifies her calling. It was perfect and Yary understood everything.

Yary is absolutely fantastic. I was actually there when the Hermanas first met her two months ago, which is kind of neat. She had found the church and walked in one Sunday and happened to go to Pleasant Hill's relief society back when I was serving there. Our RS President told us to grab the Spanish missionaries quickly! Bless Yary, she doesn't speak any English at all and she sat all through an hour of English relief society.

She's from Cuba and has been living in the estados unidos for one year. She's ready and wants to be baptized, but she's in a rough living situation with her previous boyfriend (there's a story I won't get into) that she couldn't get out of without a job, and because she speaks no English it's been really hard. But then on Saturday, she called us and told us she finally found a job! Definitely an answer to faithful prayers! The only catch is that she has to work on Sunday's and won't be able to come to the Spanish branch for a while, which starts at 1pm, but all on her own she suggested that maybe she could come for the Sacrament meeting of the English Ward that meets at 9am! (Which also happens to be Pleasant Hill) How sweet is that?! Even before making those baptismal covenants she realizes the importance of partaking of the sacrament and is willing to attend even when she doesn't speak the language. I understand how that is now. We're so happy for her! She's going to work and save to move out while also praying to find something else that will let her come to church on Sundays.

Another one of my favorite people is our recent convert, Estela. She was baptized in February and is one of the most faith filled people I have ever met on my mission. She speaks English most of the time so I have got to know her pretty well. She came with us on the temple trip last week and was able to go down to the baptistery and she was absolutely blown away. She couldn't do baptisms because she had just had surgery on her knee, but she loved it so much. Her and her husband, Kumar, gave us a ride home after and she was totally gushing about it the whole time. She's been working on getting Kumar to investigate the church, but it's kind of hard because he's not even Christian hahaha. She's so cute and she keeps making comments about getting him one day. She's going on a trip to visit her family in New Jersey this week and she's taking them all to the Sacred Grove this week! She is so excited for this opportunity to be there and to share the gospel with her family. She's so stellar.

She and Kumar took us to go get pupusas this week (basically a mix between a quesadilla and a tamale and my favorite thing) and it was the bees knees. I adore them.

Several newsletters ago I talked about a youth investigator Sister McCullough and I taught in Lake Crescent named Hector. He just graduated high school and he was on date for baptism a while ago but he told us he wanted to take a break from lessons so we gave him some space for a few weeks. About a month ago he let us start meeting with him again when I was with Sister Evans & Sister Hill (whom I miss dearly and with all my heart). Hector had some pretty serious concerns and honestly it was pretty hard to leave. But thanks to the technology that the Lord has blessed us with to hasten His work, Sisters Evans & Hill were able to Skype Hermana Klein & I into a lesson on Saturday and that was super neat. It was nice to be able to be apart of helping address his concerns and see how he's doing. Hermana Klein also had some great input and gave a new perspective to helping him with his needs. We think that meeting with the YSA missionaries and being apart of the Buena Vista YSA will be really good for him. Continued prayers for him is encouraged.

We also had an amazing lesson with Hermana Klein's recent convert that "bible bashed" us last week and our Branch Mission Leader, Hermano Suarez, came and was able to take over and teach the lesson, essentially. It went so perfectly. Hermano Suarez loves this convert and is like best friends with him, and he took his concerns and broke it down and addressed each one flawlessly. We found out that our convert was trying to share the gospel with some of his friends at work and then they started saying negative things about the church and making statements that he knew were not true, but also made him doubt how much he actually knew about the church. What made this especially hard is that He hasn't been able to come to church since he's been baptized because he got a new boss that makes him work Sundays (working on Sundays is a HUGE PROBLEM in Spanish work! My comp and I have a lot of feels about it but I'll save that for another time). But our lesson went so well and he felt so much better after and now he knows how to address others when they say false things about the church. He even was able to switch a shift and came to Sacrament yesterday! We were so happy! And to top it all off, he brought his Tithing to pay for this first time! He asked us how to fill out the slip and everything and we were over the moon!

Hermana Klein and I were also able to have some lessons with almost all of the recent converts in our area of the branch and teach about how Green Tea is not apart of living the Word of Wisdom and everyone took it so well! It was received much better than expected and we are relieved. Now we just have to get the memo to the rest of the branch.

I had an interview with President this week and he let me know that it was unlikely that I will stay in Spanish work this upcoming transfer. Even though that is what I was expecting, it was still sad to hear. I can't believe how much I have come to love the people here in so little time even with the language barrier. But it does make sense to have a missionary who actually speaks Spanish to be here. We get the transfer calls and will find out this Saturday for sure, but just a heads up that you are probably going to want to start addressing anything for me to the mission office. (10502 Satellite Blvd Ste E, Orlando, FL 32837. Just in case you forgot. I'd love letters. also care packages with fruit by the foot.)

Nos vemos,

Week 43 (June 13th-19th)

Being bible bashed is unfortunate. Being bible bashed by a recent convert is the worst. We had a rough week. but let me back up and elaborate on the positives first because those are what is keeping me going.

I got to go back to my beloved temple on Friday! Those flower beds we planted were looking fiiine. We went to do baptisms for the dead with so many recent converts! We went on the Branch temple night and so everyone was there to see and support them and so many other missionaries were there with their recent converts and it was a grand time. It was the first time I was able to go and see the baptistery and it was lovely. One of Hermana Klein's recent converts, Humberto, brought family names to be baptized and confirmed for! His wife Celia has been a faithful member for over 30 years and Humberto finally made the decision to be baptized last month and so it was a really tender experience for them to be there together and do baptisms for their ancestors.

We have two people that we met this week that are really looking to change their lives and have been humbled by their circumstances. I know that the Gospel will bless them endlessly and I really hope that they can recognize the Spirit as they follow up on our invitations and keep their commitments. and a big blessing for me is that they are both also fluent in English and so I'm glad that I'm able to really tag team with Hermana Klein to help teach them the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I am starting to say complete prayers in Spanish! I can also adequately greet and dismiss others. Other than that I've been really blessed with the interpretation of tongues, because I have been able to understand a majority of our lessons and meetings. However I feel bad that I can't significantly contribute more to our lessons than broken prayers (getting better!) and occasional stuttered verses. Hermana Klein has been utterly killing it and is one of the most powerhouse missionaries I have ever worked with. She handles the lessons with ease and welcomes and encourages and helps me with input in our lessons and planning and preparing for people. She amazes me.

A huge problem very prevalent in our branch/Spanish work in general: There are so many members- from less active to devoutly faithful- that drink green tea. We think a lot of them are just oblivious or forgot what they have been taught or maybe it's a cultural thing. So a big thing Hermana Klein and I have been focusing our member visits and dinners on is having all the branch members read the For the Strength Pamphlet. It outlines more specifically the word of Wisdom and talks about some of the other things we've noticed problems with in our branch (i.e. piercings & modesty).

To illustrate the problem, another one of the recent converts (who came to the temple with us and I adore) offered a mint to Hermana Klein on Sunday. She accepted and noticed it tasted a little off. When she asked what kind of mint it was, she saw the label and discovered it was a Green Tea mint. 😐 She leapt up and said she had to go to the bathroom and I followed her out, not knowing what just happened. I just thought she really had to go. She ran into bathroom and spit it in the trash and came right back out and I was super confused. Then she went to the drinking fountain and started rinsing out her mouth between telling me what happened. It was so funny. It was so sad. So we got a verde té problem in Buena Ventura.

In the meantime, we go to visit another one of Hermana Klein's recent converts; who was super solid all throughout the lesson process and passed his baptismal interview with flying colors and then on Saturday he decides to hit us with some Book of Mormon doubts and broke our hearts. Hermana Klein was especially flustered, seeing as she taught him and helped him prepare for baptism very thoroughly. At that point of the lesson I kind of only understood half of what was being said- but I understood very clearly when Hermana Klein said "...You made a promise before God that you knew this is true." and I got second degree burns from that righteous fire. So don't mind us, we're just trying to keep all the recent converts afloat the old ship Zion and keep ourselves together in the process.

Hermana Klein and I have both agreed that these past two weeks have been somewhat of a refiners fire, but we have remained steadfast and determined to improve this branch and the work in this area. A lot of growing is happening and we are both grateful. But I also need a t-shirt that says, "Powered by Prayer" because true.

Hasta luego,

-Hermana Olivia Petty 🍹

El Uno con Español

Week 42 (June 6th-12th)

Buckle in because this week was a crazy ride. In what I can confidently deem the most difficult week of my mission, I was emergency transferred out of Lake Crescent and away from my beloved Sister Evans and Sister Hill. Allow me to back track and elaborate a little.

At the start, this week was exceedingly normal. We had a great P-Day and Tuesday was Zone Conference. We received great training and instruction and were told about a recent visit that our mission leaders had with Elder Juan A. Uceda of the Seventy. He advised us as missionaries to try to talk less and do more as we serve others in our work. Meaning we are not just called to teach, we are called to serve as we do so. So that was neat.

Wednesday we had temple grounds service and Second Harvest back to back. As I've said in previous letters I love being able to serve on the temple grounds and help beautify the House of the Lord. We planted new flowers into flower beds and it was really fun, I felt like I was on a Mormon message or something. I wish we had a picture of all the work we did and us covered in dirt, but it started pouring rain before we got the chance. Just know that it looked lovely.

It was at this time we received a call from President Clark, and when we saw his name on our caller ID fear struck into our hearts. As a trio, there is a possibility that any one of you could be emergency transferred at any moment. Trios are kind of like a security blanket in case a missionary has to go home but they can't leave their companion alone and they don't want to close the area. Instead they just send one of the spare missionaries from a trio over.

Ever since we came together Sister Evans, Sister Hill and I knew this was a possibility. However we were really hoping and praying that we would all stay together for the entirety of the six week transfer at least. I don't think I have really explained how much I love those sisters and being with them adequately in my last few letters. For a lot of missionaries, trios are difficult to be in and can cause a lot of hardship for the missionaries in them. That was not the case with us at all. Everyday was a blast and every night was a slumber party and surely there could not be a happier companionship among all the missionaries in the land of the Florida Orlando Mission.

So when we saw an incoming call from President Clark, we feared exceedingly. We answered and the conversation literally opened with this:
"Hello Sisters, do any of you speak Spanish?"
After a pause I hesitantly answered, "I do?" and Sister Evans punched me to be quiet.
"Who is I do?"
"...Sister Petty"
"Sister Petty, you speak Spanish?"
"Well not really actually, I just took it in high school and I actually really wanted to go Spanish speaking on my mission"
President paused and said, "Okay, I may call you in the future."
When the call ended we all started screaming. What had I done? Why did I say that? What does this mean?

Apparently the future was not far off. Two hours later while serving at Second Harvest we got another call. I was in a small conference room with about ten missionaries from my zone and they wanted to hear what happened, so we put it on speaker phone and they were silent.
"Sister Petty, will you go down to the Buena Ventura Spanish branch with Hermana Klein?" I was frozen.
"...Do I have a choice?"
"Of course you have a choice, you always have a choice." I felt a half second of relief. "The choice is wether not you will be an obedient missionary."
The silence was broken by each of us. "OOOOOOOHHH." and then everyone remembered they were being quiet. And that was that. I told him I accept the call and he told me to be at the mission home by 6am the next day. Out of all the Sister Missionaries in a trio throughout the mission, I was deemed the most qualified with 3.5 years of high school Spanish under my belt.

So now I am back in Kissimmee, but in the Buena Ventura branch this time around. My companion is Hermana Klein from Centerville, Utah. She was actually in my district when I was here in the Pleasant Hill Ward, and she's an absolute rockstar missionary. She's been out for about a year and she is handling everything exceptionally well.  Her previous companion, Hermana Hatch, was sent home due to illness. She went to the Mexico MTC and contracted some sort of virus or parasite there and hasn't been well since. Recently she'd been light headed and passing out so President thought it'd be best for her to go home and get well and come back. So here I am.

Honestly the hardest part has been being separated from my two companions. Not the fact that I don't speak the language, not that I got food poisoning from the dia de padre branch party on Saturday night (not kidding), but that I miss my trio. Those 2.5 weeks I was with Sister Evans and Sister Hill were some of the very best of my mission.

I'm excited to be here (I don't know if excited is the word, but apprehensive doesn't quite fit either...), and am super honored and humbled to be thrown into Spanish work halfway through my mission. (Literally half, today is my nine month mark in the field, I don't wanna talk about it) I can't speak very much Spanish at all, but I have been amazed at how much I understand; I understand a majority of what is going on and what is being said most of the time. I have complete and total faith that that is not just because I have learned some before, but because of the blessings I have received from being a full time missionary. I know that if the Lord needs me here He will provide a way. Just like with Nephi of old (1 Nephi 3:7).

Remember how Elder Uceda said to talk less do more? I think I'm winning because no habla mucho espanol.

Te tenga una buena semana,

The One with The June Monsoon

Week 41 (May 29th-June 5th)

Little April showers showed up late, and it was more of a June monsoon. There have been plenty of rainy days in Florida, finally. A lot of the residents were growing quite concerned, and I'm pretty sure most of them have not seen brown/yellow dead grass before. All the retention ponds were down three feet and apparently in other areas of the state there were scattered wildfires. I feel guilty that I had been enjoying the lack of moisture thus far, as it means the humidity has been very mild. In Utah, we get severe heat in the summers, but it is dry as a bone. But when it's hot and humid, it sucks the life force out of me. At least the rain is lovely and not too warm.

When I first came to Florida in September the summer was winding down, but I did experience a few of the summer storms. When it rains it is warm outside. That is nothing I had ever experienced before. Where I'm from if it's dark and grey and gloomy it's nice and chilly outside. Here it's like an oven in the ocean. I'm glad it hasn't got to that point yet.

The small talk about the weather has a purpose, because pouring rain doesn't stop the work of the Lord. Even when you are on foot. At least this time my shoes didn't foam over with dish soap! We actually thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as we trekked in the rain from house to house. I preferred it to biking on a regular sunny day.

Yes, we are still on bikes. Which is a surprise to all of us considering both Sister Evans and I had previously and separately talked to President Clark in interviews and told him we need to be in a full car area. For me due to my being prone to episodes of heat exhaustion, and for Sister Evans due to her being hit by a car while on her bicycle back in December. Yes, she was hit by a car. It's an actual miracle her ankle didn't break because she has faith sufficient to be healed. It's an amazing story. I'll have to tell you sometime. Anyway, her injury has been acting up when she bicycles and her ankle swells quite badly.

In fact, we were biking the other day in scalding heat with a humidity percentage in the 90's (hooray for rain) and she was not doing well. We were on our way to drop by a Members home and then we asked if she needed to take a break and sit down. She very plainly told us in a firm voice, "We need to get to that members house and I need a Priesthood blessing." Sister Hill and I quickly accepted that and we hustled over. When we got there, the Brother called another Priesthood holder to come over to assist in giving a blessing for the healing of the sick and afflicted. It was powerful for me to see such strong faith displayed in my companion as well as the power of the Priesthood. I am so grateful that those members were home and willing and worthy to act.

More on the work and the (unfortunately) few people we are teaching next week, be a good person and don't cut people off in traffic,
